Specially trained craftsmen called scribes were the ones who wrote everything. Scribes were usually members of the upper class, sometimes a scribe might be a commoner who worker for a noble or a priest. The scribes wrote record of things like history, religion and daily events. The scribe would make himself charcoal and inks to use. The Aztec make a paper from tree bark. They would also write on animal skins or on woven cloth. They would fold a long strip of paper back and forth to form the pages of a codex. The codex had a wooden board, a book cover, at each end to protect the pages. A few codex exist today and many of them are in important libraries around the world. An Aztec book is called a codex. We have learnt a lot about the Aztec life after people have found old codices but many were burned or destroyed. Many of the codices were more than a meter long and folded. The codex you can see in the photo is glyphs painted on dried deerskin and then washed with lime.
